I wake panting and dripping with sweat, then scream bloody murder.

“Ray?” The three brothers are crouched around the open flap of my tent. All of them look concerned, and that sets me on edge. I quickly sit up and ask. “What’s wrong?”

“You tell us, Raya. You were the one screaming in your sleep.” I cock my head to the side and look at Boston. I can see in his eyes that he is serious. I don’t know why, but I feel like I can’t tell them the truth. What if by a small chance Kai is right and they are lying to me? Kai said they spelled me, and not once have they mentioned that to me. With all that said, I decide to lie.

“I’m sorry. I had a nightmare.”

“About what?” Bronx sounds suspicious, so I have to think fast.

“I have been getting them a lot lately. I keep dreaming that my mom is dying, and I can’t save her.” All three of the brothers’ shoulders droop, and understanding enters each of their gazes.

“I’m sorry, Ray.” I look at Bronx in shock. He doesn’t seem like the type to ever say sorry.

“It’s okay. I’m gonna try to get some more sleep, if that’s okay.” They each nod and wish me goodnight. Boston and Bronx turn to leave, but Memphis stays behind and zips the flap.

Before it can close fully, he pops his head in and says, “I like you, Raya, but if you put either of my brothers lives in danger, you will pay the price.” I gulp loudly and nod my head in understanding. Once the flap is closed, I flop back down and start to wonder if Kai is right.
